The 1919 Peace Celebrations


I have recently discovered some minutes of meetings of "The Peace Celebration Committee" held in mid-July 1919. The committee consisted of many of the landowners and tradesmen of the Parish. People such as the Rev. Venables, Mr. W.A. Hounsom, Mr.W. Loveys, Mr.W. Langmead and Mr. McCoombe.

July 14th. 1919

A meeting of the Peace Celebration Committee was held this evening.

After discussion it was resolved that a Tea be provided for the women and children.

The following were appointed as a Tea Committee. Mr.C.W. Whatley, Mrs. Horne, Mrs. Langmead, Misses McLeod, Pocock and Mr. J Horne with power to add.

It was resolved that the following be a committee to arrange for Sports for Children and Adults. Messrs J.R. Boxall, W.Langmead, J.Horne, A. Simmons, W.Harrison, W.Collins and C.White.

It was resolved that Fireworks be purchased by Mr.W.F.McCoombe and Mr.W Harrison.

It was resolved that Mr.W.F.McCoobe be asked to organise a collection towards expenses.

 

September 18th 1919

A meeting of the Committee was held this evening.

Mr.W.Loveys proposed and Mr.W.Langmead seconded that Mr.W.A.Hounsom take the chair.

Mr.McCoombe gave a report of Collection. The amount collected amounting to £86.14.1.

Mr.J.Horne gave an a/c of Peace Day Celebrations.

It was resolved that a supper be arranged for acting and ex-servicemen.

It was proposed by Mr.J.Horne, seconded by Mr.W.Harrison that the Supper be given in the Club room of the Shoulder of Mutton Inn. It was suggested  that the date should be if possible Oct. 16th and that the price of tickets and invitations be left to the Sub Committee.
