Chichester Canal – Past, Present and Future
In keeping with the August Exhibition's theme of canals, the Group’s meeting in September featured an illustrated talk by Linda Chunter about the Chichester Canal which also celebrates its bicentenary next year. She entertained the members and guests with details of the canal’s construction and expectations, its decline and subsequent rejuvenation into a leisure resource, finishing with its development and hopes for the future.

Archeological Dig in Burndell Road
October’s meeting saw the long-awaited talk by Dr. Phil Harding, the famous archaeologist from television's Time Team programme. He entertained a full house of nearly 200 History Group members and general public, in the main hall of the Village Hall.
The audience laughed at his anecdotes and tales about how he started out in archaeology and the twists and turns his career took on the journey to becoming possibly one of TV’s most recognisable archaeologists. His long, straggly blond hair and floppy hat being his badge of honour.
He finished with talking about the 6000-year-old hoard of pottery sherds and flints that were discovered on one of the new building sites in Burndell Road.
His 90-minute-long talk culminated with Phil moving amongst his audience answering the various questions they put to him. Afterwards, the History Group supplied refreshments to those who wanted them with Phil staying to the very end talking and having his photo taken with whoever requested one.
During the afternoon, Wessex Archaeology put on an exhibition for local school children from local schools. They could see, read about and sometimes touch archaeological items including Roman and Anglo-Saxon artifacts. The highlight for many was putting on a pair of Virtual Reality glasses which gave them the vision of being inside Roman and Anglo-Saxon buildings with the ability to move about in them.
The Yapton & Ford Local History group would like to thank Wessex Archaeology for arranging and overseeing the event which was an unmitigated success.
